Goals, Productivity, and Happiness

Dear Blog,

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve written about tracking progress, so today I thought I’d share some results and try to offer a tip or two.

I’d also like to stress, again, the importance of writing it down. I didn’t do so hot last week taking my own advice. But my husband’s been home this whole time so I’m cutting myself some slack. I’ll get back on track soon.

While I honestly don’t know what all I did and what I didn’t, I do know some things. With the exception of one day, I’ve been writing my minimum daily word count of 250 words, with lots of days well over that. Yesterday, I “donated” words to make up for that so my word tracking spreadsheet still looks beautiful.

Should I be happy about that? Shouldn’t I be disappointed that I didn’t actually meet the goal? Well, it’s only a small fudge, so I’m not going to lose sleep over it. And it keeps me happy seeing that white box (otherwise it shows red). My happiness is a bit more important than following self-imposed rules.

There are so many things we want to do, and quite often we don’t have (or make) the time to do them. On one hand, it’s not like we’re getting graded on poor productivity in our personal lives. On the other, if we’re unhappy with our progress, we need to change something: either the way we work or the way we think.

But the thing is, we have the ability to do far more than we think. It’s just, are we pushing ourselves enough? And are we getting out of our own way?

Those are some big questions that require self-reflection.

I’ll be working on a new plan to improve my productivity and I hope to have some more tips in the coming weeks!
