Grammar Series, No. 1: Is it “A lot”, “Alot”, or “Allot”?

Is it "a lot", "alot", or "allot"?

  • "A lot" means "many", as in "I have a lot of chickens."

  • "Alot" is not a word.

  • "Allot" means to assign or distribute by lot, as in "I allotted twenty minutes to clean the chicken coop."
